RES celebrates UK Wind Week with music under the turbine
Some 1200 people from all over west Hertfordshire
blew into Beaufort Court on Saturday 19th June in
celebration of UK Wind Week. An excellent array of local
bands and choirs performed throughout the day: as visitors made
their way to enjoy the 'music under the turbine', delicious food
and drinks were on sale from local providers Dallings of Kings
Langley, Smiths Coffee of Apsley and Blackwells of
Chipperfield, who all donated a proportion of their
proceeds to the charity of the day, the Watford Peace
Hospice. At the bike arena, meanwhile, visitors were trying
out all sorts of unusual bicycles including tandems, fold-ups,
electric bikes and trailers, lent to the event by a combination of
RES staff and St Albans bike shop Addiktion.

Mike Penning MP opened the proceedings as the Hertfordshire Concert
Band gently swayed visitors into the mood for the day. The
three home-grown acts that followed proved the kind of quality the
local community has to offer: the Kings Langley Community Choir
with a variety of international pieces, Dan Maslen's melodic folk
on guitar and harmonica, and The Kimms from Boxmoor had many up and
dancing to their successful adaptations of well known numbers such
as 'Lazing on a Windy Afternoon'. Three up and coming bands from
London, keen to promote wind power in the UK, gave their free time
to come and play at Beaufort Court: the Fan Club, Natalia and
Alexander Wolfe provided a varied afternoon of top quality music.
The day finished with a fabulous jazz concert and morris
dancing.
Up in the Green Village, hundreds of children made recycled
windmills, windsocks and paper aeroplanes, whilst older visitors
learned about sustainable water, energy and food from an array of
community stalls. "It was a busy day, and lovely to see so many
children enjoying themselves," said Kerry Lanigan of the Watford
Recycling Arts Project. RES also put on displays about their work
developing wind farms and biomass projects, as well as
demonstrations of PV panels. The day was put on by 50
volunteers from the company's local staff.
