Key Stage 1 Programmes

Beaufort Court is an ideal location to bring your class to find out more about renewable energy and what it can do. We have a range of different renewables here and during the site tour your class can get very close to a real wind turbine. In our workshops your pupils have the opportunity work as a team and produce a wind powered pulley, create electrical circuits using solar panels and generate electricity using water power. Just a few examples of the hands on learning on offer, free of charge at Beaufort Court. To book your visit, click here.

General visit – short (Suggested for Foundation or KS1) - Forces and Movement

Activity

 Learning Opportunities

Theme:
Forces and Movement

  • Thinking about what is expected to happen and whether results support the prediction
  • Making measurements
  • Making observations and explaining what has been found out
  • Deciding whether comparisons are fair.
Warm up and introduction
Introduction to Wind as a power source
Sc4 Physical Processes Forces and Motion 2a-c

Tour of site:
Solar PV panels, wind turbine + energy efficiency features of Beaufort Court

Free question and answer session;
Speaking and Listening
Practical activity
(in classroom or outside as weather allows):Flip the fish Pinwheels
Most children will be able to describe the wind as a force which can be harnessed to do work. Some may only be able to say that the wind turns the turbine (not the other way around)Some may be able to explain how they made their comparison fair and suggest several factors to investigate.
Quiz/storytime
 Total time:   1hr 30mins
Children will go home with: hands-on experience of how sun and wind can make electricity; Optional: a poem or small windmill to take home (see section on optional activities)
