NOVEMBER | 'SHOUT ABOUT' week

Shout About Week takes place in early November to reflect on the prospect of climate change and to consider ways to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. The visits are part of a nationwide 'event for 11-13 year olds, Shout About Climate Change', coordinated by Friends of the Earth.  See www.foe.org for further information about this year's event.  If you would like to arrange a visit, please book early.

'SHOUT ABOUT' week | November 2005

RESpect Energy Resources! say pupils
During early November 2005, nearly 400 pupils from local schools visited Beaufort Court.  12 classes of around 30 pupils came to visit Beaufort Court over 4 days, and each visit focused on two approaches to combatting climate change: reducing our consumption of energy and sources of renewable energy.

Pupils found out the ways in which Beaufort Court had been rennovated to be energy efficient, and were encouraged to consider ways of saving energy at home and at school. Then they looked at the ways in which the Beaufort Court is heated and powered using energy from the wind, the sun and a biomass crop. Most of the pupils also visited the recylcling centre at the Apsley Paper Mill, and walked to Beaufort Court along the canal to look at other aspects of the local environment.

"I was fascinated by what we learnt about solar and wind power," remarked Big G, a student from Year 9 at Longdean School in Hemel Hempstead. "I believe that wind turbines and electric cars really can cut down pollution and reduce global warming."

Students were able to analyse the building's performance in its first two years of operation.

As another pupil from Longdean calculated, "I learned that the amount of electricity generated over the past 2 years would have powered the floodlights for more than 30,000 football matches!"
